Computational Engineering allows analysis of problems that would otherwise be almost impossible by traditional experimentation due to cost or safety for example. Virtual prototyping can provide modeling, analysis, simulation, optimization, and thus a safer and more cost effective alternative to investigate new engineering solutions. This course offers a solid grounding in modern computational engineering, with a strong electromagnetics emphasis. Students will gain multidisciplinary in-depth training in the application of numerical and computational techniques which will prepare them either for a career in industry or research in an area where these tools play a significant role.

The year of study is divided into part I and part II. Part I relates to the first two semesters where the taught stage of the programme takes place. Part II relates to the project stage of the programme where students undertake a major individual project during the summer. The basic structure of each taught semester is 11 weeks of teaching followed by a period for revision and examinations.
The taught subject programme consists of modules totalling 120 credits, which comprise eight compulsory modules. Each taught module has a credit value of either 10 or 20 credits apart from a 30 credit module which has a credit distribution of 20 credits in the autumn semester and 10 credits in the spring; the individual project module has 60 credits.
