课程特征 Course Features
Overview
The MSc programme is designed to prepare students for research, either as research students in universities, or professional mathematicians/statisticians/probabilists with a postgraduate training. It complements the MSc in Modern Applications of Mathematics and uses units on offer within the existing MMath programme. This MSc accommodates candidates with interests and backgrounds in pure mathematics, applied mathematics, statistics and probability: with normally all taught components being provided by the Department of Mathematical Sciences. These features distinguish the programme from the MSc in MAM (for which the interdisciplinary nature is a defining component). The MSc programme, caters for students who wish to pursue studies in pure areas of mathematical science within a ``graduate school" environment engendered by large overall numbers of postgraduate students. The programme serves to widen the available choice in postgraduate study, to exploit the strong research/teaching base, and to enhance Bath's profile (both nationally and internationally) as a centre for postgraduate study in mathematics, statistics & probability. The MSc Programme will comprise a taught component (Stage I) followed by a project component culminating in a dissertation (Stage II). Students who successfully complete Stage I, and demonstrate advanced competence in the M Level taught material, may progress to the project Stage II.

Project work and dissertation (30 credits)
After the Semester 2 exams in the full-time course and in the second year of the part-time course, the student undertakes an individual project (MA50187) during the remaining period of the course until the end of the academic year. The student is required to write a report on the project by the end of the course, in the form of an assessed dissertation.
