Overview
Taking place within the World-Heritage City of Bath, the programme provides technical training within an academic framework including the philosophy of conservation and the teaching of classical architecture. The programme is taught by leading architects, structural engineers and related professionals, directed by Dr Michael Forsyth.
Teaching units include: structural conservation; history and theory; materials, construction and skills; and the law relating to conservation. The university has a well-established tradition of education and training based on interdisciplinary co-operation between architects and engineers, as well as experience in related areas and techniques, including urban management and computer modelling.
Internationally known as a leader in its field, the programme is equally popular with mid-career professionals and graduates seeking a vocational qualification in conservation. The degree has a proven track record of employability. The programme may be taken over one year full-time or two years part-time. On either route there is the equivalent of two semesters of teaching followed by a dissertation. Where students do not wish to write the dissertation, or are ineligible to progress, a Postgraduate Diploma is awarded after successful completion of the taught course only.
Bath is an ideal location for a specialist course in the conservation of historic buildings, both for the available study material and as an environment in which to live. The programme is open to architects, surveyors, engineers and suitably qualified candidates from other fields including history of art. The programme is accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS).
