Overview
All of our full-time MSc courses follow our unique pattern that takes the students from traditionally taught subject specific units, through business and group oriented modular work to the point where they can undertake a detailed technical project under individual supervision. The business and group oriented modules are common to all of our MSc courses to offer students the possibility of interacting with students on other MSc courses. This allows them to gain experience in design, project management and creativity, as well as the interdisciplinary aspects of engineering.
The basic structure of the courses is:
Semester 1 (Oct-Jan)
|
Semester 2 (Feb-May)
|
Summer/Dissertation Period (Jun-Sep)
|
Five taught units in chosen MSc subject |
•Individual Project preliminary work
•Group projects
•Management/Research modules |
Individual project leading to MSc dissertation
|
In Semester 1 students take five taught units supplemented with coursework involving laboratory or small project sessions. Typically each unit consists of 22 hours of lectures, may involve a number of hours (specified in the unit description) of tutorials/exercises and laboratory activity and approximately 70 hours of private study (report writing, laboratory results processing and revision for examinations).
In Semester 2 the courses offer group-based activities and individual project work. All our MSc students participate in the same group-based activities in design, business and project management. This will give the opportunity for students on our MSc courses to work together to share experience and technical knowledge and will provide a basis for an integrated approach to engineering. The themes covered in this semester are: Engineering & Project Management, Research & Design Methods, Creativity & Innovation Methods, and Group Activity on Integrated Engineering. In addition to these group-based activities, students will also have the opportunity to start working on the scoping and planning of their own individual project in their chosen area of research and technology, in preparation for the summer period.
In the Summer/Dissertation period (June to September) students are involved full-time in their individual project in their chosen area of interest. This will lead to their MSc dissertation, where students will be able to describe the technical aspects of their project work and discuss the results they have achieved. Depending on the chosen area of interest, the individual project may involve theoretical and/or experimental activities; for both such activities students can use the department computer suites and well-equipped and newly refurbished laboratories for experimental work. For activities that involve close interaction with Mechanical Engineering (eg, for students taking the MSc in Mechatronics) students will also have access to the facilities available within the Department of Mechanical Engineering. The individual projects are generally carried out under the supervision of a member of academic staff. A number of industrially-based projects are available to students.
