Internet Computing and Networking will be key in the immediate future of the UK and perhaps in the future of human civilisation. Writing in The Times in June 2009, former Prime Minister Gordon Brown stated that Broadband Internet is as vital as electricity, gas and water.
The programme will be grounded in proper theory, but have a strong practical focus, using facilities funded by recent HEFCE awards for both teaching and research. This practical focus will be on Internet Networks and Wireless Sensor Networks.
Wireless sensor networking is one of the most sought-after technologies in a range of industries and its inclusion in this programme makes it not far from unique. The Networks, Communications and Control Systems Research Group at Loughborough is undertaking a number of research projects in the area funded by TSB, EMDA, and the Carbon Trust in collaboration with a wide range of industry partners, from sensor manufacturers and home security and independent living providers, to automotive manufacturers. This list serves to highlight the range of areas of people’s lives that will be affected.
