课程特征 Course Features:

The Manchester MA in Theatre and Performance offers a diverse and flexible programme of study. It provides an opportunity to study cutting-edge and provocative areas of contemporary performance theory and practice, aspects of theatre history such as nineteenth century popular performance and theatre between the world wars, socially and politically engaged theatre and activist performance. The MA integrates theory and practice, and caters for students wishing to enhance their artistic and professional careers as well as those preparing for doctoral study. For experienced, skilled practitioners, there are opportunities to focus on research through practice and explore new creative methods, areas of social engagement, professional contexts, performance techniques. For students wishing to prepare for doctoral study, the programme enables you to combine taught options with the construction of your own study module under the careful supervision of specialist staff.

The course builds on links between the University of Manchester and professional contexts and communities in Greater Manchester and beyond. It encourages the research and practice of theatre and performance that is creative and innovative, engages in experimental approaches as well as non-traditional and/or community sites. We particularly support theatre projects that engage with issues relating to transformation, critique and social responsibility.

课程内容 Course Content :

The Manchester MA in Theatre and Performance is a flexible programme, with 60 credits of taught and structured delivery followed by a range of opportunities for students to construct a bespoke programme from within the specialist areas of Drama at the University of Manchester. These areas include internationally-leading expertise in applied theatre practice and research, theatre history, contemporary performance practice and screen practice and research. The programme is intellectually challenging and practically diverse, providing an ideal pathway for continuing professional work and/or preparation for doctoral study. It builds on international, national and local links to professional partners, and offers students an opportunity to engage in and benefit from ongoing research in the subject area.

Core elements include a research methods course and an advanced performance theory and practice course that explores contemporary and historical examples of theatre and performance practice (totalling 60 credits). You then select a further 60 credits drawn from combinations of the following: a `Professional Practices' course, offering an opportunity to gain experience in a `real-world' applied theatre context; a number of MA study options; and a `directed reading' course. Finally, you complete a 12-15,000-word dissertation on an area of your choice. Your dissertation can involve practical research, with a shorter written component accompanied by a practical project.

This degree is open to graduates who are interested in the research and practice of contemporary theatre, including theatre and performance practice that combines artistic exploration with a social, educational or political focus. It offers an opportunity to research and practice theatre in a range of dynamic and challenging settings, from theatre in prisons, to site-specific experimental theatre, and theatre spaces of established cultural centres in the city and wider region.

教学与评估 Teaching and Assessment:

The Manchester MA in Theatre and Performance aims to enhance students' capacity to engage in advanced research and practice in theatre and performance, both on an independent basis and in collaboration with their peers. The programme will prepare students for further academic study and/or employment in the field of theatre and performance. It involves the study of a comprehensive and unique range of specialist areas within theatre and performance studies and will enable students to interrogate their own, their peers' and a range of professional practices. The MA fosters students' skills in critically evaluating current and advanced scholarship and practice in theatre and performance. Students learn how to develop critiques of that scholarship, and offer original, independent responses.

Following a mandatory first semester, students are free to construct their MA programme from a diverse range of options, including established study options within the subject area and Faculty of Humanities, a `Professional Practices' option and a directed reading option (enabling you to construct your own module with the careful supervision of specialist staff). This flexibility enables you to construct a programme that best fits your post-graduation plans.

The mandatory elements (totalling 60 credits) include a research methods course and an advanced performance theory and practice course. You then select a further 60 credits drawn from the following: a `Professional Practices' course, offering an opportunity to gain experience in a `real-world' theatre or applied theatre context; a number of MA study options; and a `directed reading' course (independent study with one to one supervision). MA study options based in Drama typically include (depending on staff availability): Performance and war; Creative learning; Making culture; Staging the New Sex; Popular theatre and entertainment 1820-1890; Body and text in contemporary theatres. Finally, you complete a 12-15,000-word dissertation on an area of your choice. Your dissertation can involve practical research, with a shorter written component accompanied by a practical project.

Students are taught by seminars, small group tutorials, workshops and surgeries, offering opportunities for lively and engaged discussions. One-to-one supervision is offered on all dissertations. Assessment is primarily by written assignment: essays, reports, self-assessments and dissertations.

The final submission is a 15,000-word dissertation on a topic chosen in consultation with the dissertation supervisor. Most units have a practical component, although assessment is generally through various kinds of written work, including essays, log-books, evaluation reports, project critiques and practice analysis.

Career opportunities
Whilst this is a non-vocational programme, graduates have access to a diverse range of career opportunities, directly in the theatre and media industry as producers and artists, or in various r
elated areas such as administration, teaching and educational work. Some students also pursue doctoral study and research.

Students have gone on to work successfully as independent theatre practitioners, in small-scale theatre organisations and venues, and in a range of national and international contexts, including with rural and urban communities in the US, and with theatre-makers in Iran. Some students have continued with us to take up PhD study, for example, researching the function of the voice in documentary performance, and the representation of psychiatry and psychiatric conditions in contemporary British drama.
