课程特征 Course Features:

This two-year studio-based course is designed to foster the development of your creative potential and your own individual pathway to original research, practice and exhibition/publication. It aims to expand your practical and intellectual skills and to help you to establish yourself as a practitioner in fine art or in another career in the visual arts field, nationally or internationally.

课程内容 Course Content:

The programme is for fine art graduates and for those with other backgrounds who want to pursue professionalism and excellence in their practice as artists. Supported by a programme of seminars, presentations and group critiques, the course emphasises the development of your practice through self-directed and independent studio-based study. We provide well-resourced facilities, including excellent studio space and wood, metal, media and other workshops with full-time technical support. The course culminates in the MFA degree exhibition held in the Hatton Gallery: Great North Museum and throughout the spacious Fine Art studios.

The programme comprises modules to a credit value of 360. Modules include: Stage 1 studio work (110 credits); research training (20 credits); beyond discipline (20 credits); dissertation subject development (30 credits); Stage 2 studio work (150 credits); and a dissertation (30 credits). The fine art training module in the first year investigates exhibition practice and the practical, professional and intellectual skills needed to practise as an artist. It also encourages you to exhibit in the city, make connections in the region, and set up contacts for use beyond the degree. The dissertation aims to support your practice and to increase your understanding of the relationship between the written, the theoretical and the visual in your creative practice.

You are taught by a wide range of distinguished practising artists, including visiting lecturers, who include some of the country’s most exciting and ambitious artists. You have regular meetings with your tutor and can discuss your work with all fine art staff, so that you benefit from the full range of expertise available. Our exchange scheme also gives you the chance to study in Europe or overseas at one of our partner institutions.

Extra costs may be incurred for materials and travel as part of the degree; however some financial support may be available.
