In order to be accepted onto our MSc courses with no conditions on your English, you must show English test results equivalent to IELTS 6.5 with broadly consistent scores in the elements of the test. We accept IELTS and TOEFL (paper, computer or iBT). We do not recognise any other English testing system and we do not routinely carry out English proficiency interviews as a substitute for English test results.
For students with an IELTS of 6.0 (or equivalent), the pre-sessional English course is compulsory. You will be tested at the end of the pre-sessional course, and those not making satisfactory progress will be required to undertake additional in-sessional English classes.
See the Centre for Applied Linguistics website for more information on the pre-sessional course. Students intending to take the pre-sessional course prior an MSc should still apply to WMG. Note that we will not accept students with no score or an IELTS score below 6.0.
If you have undertaken three or more years of academic study in higher education in a predominantly English-speaking country, you may be considered for exemption from these English requirements at the discretion of the University.
We do not normally require English test results from students from Nigeria or India.
WMG may require any student to take additional English test(s) at the start of, or during the course of study. We may also require to you undertake additional in-sessional English classes if your standard of English is deemed too low.
