Problems of criminal law and criminal justice are central to our society and this programme aims to bring these two areas under scrutiny together. This LLM addresses challenging issues of criminal law – the law of homicide, sexual offences, capacity and defences – as well as important questions of criminal procedure and practice – the role of the police, the nature of criminal defence and the trial process, youth justice and penal policy. These issues will be explored not only from a practical point of view, with the assistance of leading specialists, but also from theoretical, comparative and international perspectives.

Autumn term: Issues in Criminal Law and Criminal Justice ▪ Understanding Criminal Law and Criminal Justice.
Spring term: two options, one of which must be selected from Comparative Criminal Justice Systems ▪ Criminal Law and Healthcare ▪ International and Transnational Offending ▪ International Crimes ▪ Restorative and Community Justice ▪ Sexual Violence and Hate Crime. The range of options available in any one year may vary.
Summer term and vacation: supervised work on the LLM dissertation.

The courses are assessed by a combination of coursework, unseen examinations, 4,000-5,000-word essays, and a dissertation of 15,000 words.

Our graduates have gone on to careers in education, and also roles as magistrates, tutors, posts in the Ministry of Finance, the Citizen's Advice Bureau, the United Nations, the International War Crimes Tribunals and the International Criminal Court as well as in a wide range of international and domestic agencies, including ministries of justice, police and prosecution. There is also a strong demand for International Criminal Law graduates in non-governmental organisations and, for those suitably qualified, as lawyers practising in this rapidly growing area.
