Overview
In a rapidly developing global market place the emerging critical differentiating issue is the one of Design, in terms of appeal, innovation speed and cost effectiveness. It is this activity that needs to understand the needs of increasingly demanding customers of whatever type. Design, whether from a process, a support system or technology perspective impacts across all sectors of industry.
The aim of this masters programme is to provide a high level programme for graduates who wish to specialise in engineering design in a holistic manner. In particular, it has a number of critical operational objectives, as well as undertaking an industry related challenging design project. These objectives are to provide an understanding of the issues associated with creativity and innovation; to give detailed knowledge and experience of the issues of global working; to provide a number of techniques to enable the management of engineering design projects and teams; and, to introduce a number of knowledge management strategies associated with design rationale, information for innovation, design reuse, manufacturing knowledge, and knowledge based engineering. This programme will also be underpinned by the areas of research falling within the remit of the University's EPSRC funded IdMRC (Innovative Design and Manufacturing Research Centre).
Design, variously known as New Product Development, or the Product Introduction Process, will be interpreted in a holistic manner to encompass a wide variety of activities. These activities can range from the soft, such as setting up supply chains, to the equally challenging analysis or simulation of a component, mechanism or control system. They include developing and understanding customer requirements and creating and developing solutions that are cost effective, can be manufactured and comply with environmental and legislative frameworks. In the modern world, where consumers demand higher performance, the latest styling, stable and even reducing costs, companies are required to have available a constant stream of new offerings. It is intended to make students aware of the nature of this range of challenges.
The course is delivered in 3 elements a taught programme of core material, a series of high intensity specialist modular course and a detailed design and make project.
