课程特征 Course Features:

The MSc Business and Management programme has been developed within the General Management/Business area of postgraduate study, where we have been running very successful programmes for over twenty years. It is a programme that aims to prepare graduates, from any discipline, for a career in business and management. It will particularly suit those who:
•wish to pursue a broad based postgraduate management programme rather than a more specialist management degree
•aim for a career in management, but who have not yet gained sufficient career experience to be considered for an MBA

The programme will provide you with the opportunity to acquire deep knowledge and understanding of key business and management subjects, that are highly relevant for any management career. These include:
•Marketing and operations management.
•Financial management.
•Managing human resources.
•Developing business strategy and implementing change.

 
课程内容 Course Content :

Semester one units
In the first part of the course, you will develop your knowledge of the key functions of management.

Marketing Principles (15 credits)
This unit explores the fundamental concepts, principles and practices of marketing, including:
•business orientations
•macro and micro marketing environments
•segmentation
•targeting and positioning
•marketing planning and research
•consumer and organisational behaviour
•marketing mix
•marketing across borders
•business ethics

Financial Management (15 credits)
This unit provides the concepts and techniques underpinning both financial and management accounting. The unit also includes:
•capital expenditure appraisal
•interpretation of accounts
•financial reporting issues

Managing Human Resources (15 credits)
This unit examines concepts from the behavioural sciences, including groups, leadership, motivation, organisation design, culture, and explores their implications for the workplace.

Principles of Operations Management (15 credits)
This unit considers innovation in the design of products and services, and techniques for the control and improvement of operations, such as:
•Supply Chain Management
•Quality Management
•Enterprise Resource Planning

Semester two units
The second part of the course will then challenge you to build on and integrate the knowledge you have already gained.

Integrating Management, Strategy and Change (15 credits)
This unit concerns the nature of the role of management in strategic decision making and change, in complex and different business contexts. This module gives an opportunity to develop management skills in analysis and integrated problem solving.

Applied Business Research (15 credits)
This unit will develop your ability to critically evaluate, plan and carry out effective management research in preparation for your own dissertation.

Contemporary Challenges to Organisations
This unit explores contemporary concepts, challenges and competitive pressures affecting business organisations in a global context.

You will also choose one option unit. The options currently offered are:
Innovation and Entrepreneurship Management (15 credits)
This unit provides an appreciation of the development and management of creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship in large and small firms.

Current issues in Labour Market Analysis and Policy (Economics) (15 credits)
This unit uses economic principles to analyse the market for labour services.

Professional Development (15 credits)
Throughout the course, you will be completing the Professional Development unit that extends the range of skills to help students in their studies and future careers. We will encourage you to pursue your individual professional development, including enhancing your academic study skills, language and communication skills, and other practical management skills.

Dissertation (45 credits)
Finally, you will undertake a substantial (12,000 words) management research project (dissertation) that combines a review of previous research undertaken in your chosen topic with your own data collection and analysis. The research project provides a unique opportunity for you to demonstrate the subject knowledge you have acquired, as well as your analytical abilities and problem-solving skills - skills which are highly regarded by potential employers. During this phase your research will be supervised by an individually allocated, experienced academic with expertise in your chosen topic area.

 
教学与评估 Teaching and Assessment:
A variety of teaching and learning approaches will be used within our friendly and supportive environment. Formal classes, such as lectures and seminars will provide the basis for the development of relevant knowledge which is further developed in activity-based case studies. The aim is to enhance the career prospects of course members by putting them into situations where they have to analyse complex problems, explore the uncertainties involved, evaluate possible solutions and plan their implementation.

A personal tutor will be assigned to each student. You will have access to a specialist Academic Skills Unit which offers assistance on a wide range of issues, from essay writing to time management and referencing conventions. In addition, if English is not your first language, there are free courses available to help familiarise you with the use of English for academic purposes.

For international students we have a dedicated team of advisors to support you as you settle into life in Portsmouth and at the University.
