Career opportunities include environmental consultancies, utilities companies, local authorities as well as housing, transport and energy sectors; statutory bodies such as the Environment Agency, Natural England, wildlife trusts and non-governmental organisations around the world that are concerned with evaluating and managing biodiversity loss and pollution. This masters can also be used as a route to obtaining funded research leading to a PhD.
Just one look at an environmental recruitment search engine will illustrate the number of current vacancies, particularly amongst the many hundreds of environmental consultancies. A more detailed look will reveal that the consultancies, conservation organisations, environmental education groups and government bodies are looking for specialist skills and knowledge. There is presently a skills shortage in the sector which is largely due to the continued emergence of codes of professional practices. The ENDS report in 2007 www.ends.co.uk indentified the key skills deficits within industry as those involving environmental impact assessment, planning, field survey (particularly protected species evaluation), evaluation of contaminated land (particularly on brown field sites), water resource management and waste management.
