Two essays of 4,000 words written in relation to the autumn and spring semester option courses and submitted at the end of the first and second semesters, respectively.

One bibliographical assignment for the semester 1 Research Skills and Methods course.

A research proposal, posted and peer-reviewed online, and preliminary research plan, topic, title and working bibliography for the semester 2 Research Problems and Methods course. For students proceeding to the Diploma, this will be marked as a self-contained exercise; for students proceeding to the MSc, this will be the first stage in a dissertation project. This component of the course is marked on a pass-fail basis.

The four coursework essay assessments are weighted at 25% each. Students must gain an overall coursework pass of 50% or above in order to proceed to the dissertation. The MSc degree is awarded on the basis of the mark gained for the dissertation (but note the information given below on the award of Distinctions).
