The MA in Creative Writing is appropriate for those wishing to pursue a career in the creative industries (from editing to media) and for students who wish to pursue their academic studies to doctoral level.
The programme provides a postgraduate route for students who have completed an undergraduate degree containing some Creative Writing and who wish to proceed to a career or further study in this area. It also provides a postgraduate qualification in Creative Writing for students who have taken a conventional degree in English or similar but who have considerable experience in writing creatively. With this in mind, the MA in Creative Writing offers instruction and experience across a range of writing types, including new media, yet establishes a focus (story and story-telling) that will identify Birmingham’s unique contribution to Creative Writing studies.

The programme will bring students together who are working in different genres in order that they might engage collaboratively across genres before specialising (in screenwriting, playwriting, fiction or poetry) for their dissertations. You take four compulsory modules and two further modules selected from a list of options. Modules are taught through seminars and lectures and one-to-one tutorials.
The compulsory modules are:
•Creative Writing Research Skills: Authorship and Creativity
• Poem as Story – Story as Poem
• Intertextuality: Story, Genre, and Craft
• Dissertation – Creative Writing
The optional modules include:
• Narrative Analysis of Fiction and Film
• Film, Theory, and Politics
• Media Documentary Writing
评估 Assessment:
The programme is assessed by creative portfolios and assignments throughout the taught modules. In the final term you complete a dissertation comprising a full-length creative work of your choice (a collection of poetry or short stories, a novella, a screenplay or stage drama) supported by a critical essay.
