The main focus of the course is its emphasis on educational research and the grounding it provides students for conducting their own small-scale research projects in a wide range of educational settings. Such studies can focus on current developments in education and issues of immediate concern to students themselves. As such, as well as providing a coherent and satisfying educational experience in its own right, the MAES can serve as an excellent introduction to work at PhD level.

Term 2
Two option modules (both assessed 20 credits each) from a list of about 10. These are likely to include:
•Bilingualism
•Computer assisted language learning and e-learning
•Contemporary issues in teaching
•Cross-cultural perspectives on language and discourse
•English for academic and higher education purposes
•International issues of (in)equity
•International perspectives on science education
•Language and culture
•Language curriculum design and evaluation
•Pragmatics: language, meaning and communication
•Researching in an educational context
•Second language literacy
•Teaching and assessing speaking skills
•Teaching and learning citizenship and global education
•Topics in second language research
•Inequalities in educational opportunity and attainment: international perspectives
Term 3
•Planning and Communicating Research (20 credits) The classes are spread over Terms 2 and 3.
Students also undertake their own research projects under the guidance of a supervisor, leading to the writing of a dissertation (60 credits) based on a research study to be submitted by the middle of September. This is a major piece of work which involves developing research questions, deciding an appropriate methodology and conducting a piece of sustained original research. Examples of dissertations recently completed by students includes:

•Reforming Mathematics Education
•Practical Work in School Science Teaching
•Education Reform in Rural China
In addition to the scheduled programme sessions, there will be regular opportunities for students to share and exchange research concerns and to hear members of staff and visiting speakers talk on research matters.

•four assessed essay assignments (each 4,000 - 5,000 words in length)
•an exam in Research Methods in Education
•an assessed presentation + dissertation outline + ethics audit
•a dissertation of 12,000 words
